Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo: A review

In keeping with a very short tradition, I went to the antique bookstore near me, which had loads of choice this time in the realms of fantasy. A lot of the books were very tempting, but I kept coming back to 3 books: a paperback trilogy. I eventually asked how much all 3 were, only to be told it was written on the first page of each (I’m unobservant!) and a second-hand trilogy for £6 is not bad at all! Plus, it is, from my understanding, a popular series from an author whose works have only grown (and got darker!). I knew it might not be quite for me, being considered typical young adult fare and the knowledge of the darker stuff the author has since delved into, but hey, it got made into a Netflix series so that must count for something right? (I don’t have Netflix currently, I’m old school! I saw the trailer once… and forgot most of it!). Shadow and Bone is the first book in the same named trilogy by Leigh Bardugo and is set in the GrishaVerse: a Russian/Mongolian inspired fantasy

Due to the nature of the game, I may recruit any number warriors and warlords as long as I recruit them first time (and in line with how to recruit, namely using a super effective move, defeat in 3 turns etc.). If I fail to recruit them during that first battle, I cannot recruit them ever. HOWEVER, each warrior must either use the allotted Pokémon given to them or link with their ultimate bonded Pokémon if possible and use that one instead. If the Pokémon that a person can bond to is only available from a swarm event, it cannot be used (this is in order to make things fairer, and because my copy is getting old! I don’t want it to die on me!). If a warrior only has one slot available for a Pokémon, then they must replace it with their special bonded Pokémon or keep the current mon. The warrior or warlord must link with the Pokemon during the first encounter battle. If the battle ends without linking, I cannot try again. Factory of Runes Diamond Tormentlocke Summary

(Obviously this summary contains spoilers! This is for those who wish to jump into the sequel without having to read over 100 chapters.) Runa awakens with no memory in the rain but is found by Barry. In order to discover her origins, Runa leaves her caretaker Dawn and becomes a Pokémon trainer alongside Barry in the Sinnoh region. She gets her starter, Raguna the Turtwig, and agree to help Professor Rowan with his research into evolution, by seeing if changing each action each turn in battle results in any evolution changes (thus making the run a Tormentlocke). Runa managed to get her first catches, with the most notable being Aden the Starly, Julia the Magikarp and Bismark the Shinx. The group are asked by Runa what their dreams are, so that she can help them achieve it alongside her own. Raguna wants to be a farmer, Aden a cool leader, Julia a beauty idol and Bismark a champion. Full title: The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow: A review This is one of the few times where I’ve picked up and brought a book knowing very little about it aside from it has been widely praised. Also, it’s been described as a love letter to stories and storytellers which reminded me of books that I’ve enjoyed such as The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I felt that was enough for me to take a risk and give it a read, even if it was no longer January and this is not my 10th review this year (it’s my 11th)! The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow is her debut focusing on a recount by narrator January to a mysterious person. January grows up in early 1900s America under her rich white Archelogy collector guardian Mr. Locke while her father, Julian Scaller, goes off finding said riches for him in far flung countries. Mort by Terry Pratchett: A review

A little backstory to this. Terry Pratchett has been recommended to me by friends and others for the longest time. While I was nervous because Discworld is a huge series and I worried about what if I didn’t like it despite being popular, I decided to keep an eye out for any of the books that was personally recommended to me as good starting points. I couldn’t find any in my local libraries… and then my husband and I went to a local sports club (he does sports, I don’t!) where they have an ongoing book sale… and this was there. A quick internet search revealed it was a fair starting point especially for those beyond their teens (like me!) and it was only 30p, so bargain! I told my reading buddy… who was also recommended this as a starting point by someone else and has it on their list! Everything aligned perfectly. I woke up early in the morning and went to my garage. I was going to a rally today but I needed to finish up my sign. The sign was wood and nailed to the handle all I needed to do was paint the words. I painted in black bold letters “NO FREAKS!”, the rally was a pro-human rally…although others called it anti-Pokemon. After that I had some breakfast as I let the paint dry. As I ate breakfast I thought back a little…I wasn’t always “anti-Pokemon” in fact I thought as long as they don’t hurt anyone who cares. Then Mewtwo showed up and started to declare war…and utterly decimated forces sent against him…if one Pokemon could do that than what could a hundred, a thousand, hundreds of thousands do…the Pokemon population could easily wipe humans off the face of the map. We humans were the ones in trouble not the Pokemon…so sure call me anti-Pokemon if you want…but in reality we’re all just pro-human. I looked at the clock and figured it was time now…didn’t
