“Come on! This shop looks so cool!”

“Alright, I admit it does. Just remember we only brought 5 Pokedollars between us.”

This was the moment that Jas and Mia entered Maya’s Dream Emporium looking for a final gift to each. After all, this was going to be their last trip out for a very long time. Jas and Mia were quite young kids, 13 and 11 respectively, and were incredibly close sisters. They were the kind of siblings that did everything together, rarely argued and, while different in many respects, were also similar in many ways. Both loved Pokémon, particularly the cute chu mons, both were inspired by Tate and Lisa, to someday become joint electric gym leaders and both were fond of afternoon tea. Having said that, Jas was the quieter, more mature one who would happily spend her day gazing far away. Mia, on the other hand, was a bit hyper and impulsive and would often be seen running around the front yard. Both were a little naive, but then again living in practically the middle of nowhere helped.

Now everything was going to change. Their parents had argued for the final time and the divorce was being filed today, here in Port Town. Jas was going to stay with mum in their detached country home while Mia was going to live with dad in his swanky city apartment. Neither wanted it that way, but neither had a choice. This was it: after today, they would be communicating through letters and phone calls. It wouldn’t be the same.

For the moment, their attention was affixed on the many, many items on display in this ‘Emporium’. There was jewellery, there were trinkets, there were baubles, there was food, there were healing items, there were stones of every shade and colour. There were even a couple of items with the words ‘Do not touch’ above them. Mia instantly went towards one, her dark hair waving in glee.

“Mia! Stop! It says don’t touch for a reason.”

Mia turned to look at her sister. Jas also had dark curly hair, but hers was tapered with orange highlights, matching her coffee coloured skin well. Her eyes were a soft emerald green, and today she wore a yellow vest with green shorts and a long pink handbag to match her equally pink sandals. Mia looked similar, except she was shorter having not really started her growth spurt, had hazel eyes and wore a T-shirt and pink skirt. Her sandals were red.

Her eyes became rather downcast. “Oh...But I want to touch it!”

“Welcome!”

Both turned and saw the owner, her eyes slanted as if she herself was experiencing a pleasant dream. She wore very traditional clothes: a long light orange T-shirt held in place by pale creams and brown buttons, which reminded the sisters of the colour of dawn at home. Below this and held together by a belt around her middle was some sort of dress with chocolate stripes. She wore light boots with several laces and an orange hat with a cat like face on the front. It wasn’t any of that which surprised the girls but her pink parts. The owner had short pink hair, pink ears and a pink tail.

“Must be add-ons...” thought Jas.

Mia pointed at her. “Are you Maya?”

The person nodded. “Yes. Welcome to Maya’s Dream Emporium. How can I help you?”

Neither girl knew how to respond. Jas went eerily quiet and placed her hands gently on her younger sister’s shoulders. She felt Mia shuddering and then she screamed, tears balling out of her eyes at the pace of a dozen racing Rapidashes. Jas attempted to keep a steady tone.

“It’s alright, Mia,” she said, trying to console her, then to the shopkeeper Jas explained, “My sister and I are close, but our parents are divorcing today and we are moving away from each other. We’re looking for a parting gift...to remember...”

She couldn’t continue. A soft trickle of tears now etched her face and Mia was wetting her arms. Maya seemed nonchalant, almost aloof from the drama.

“I see. In that case, I have the perfect present.”

She went out through a back door and shortly came out with two necklaces. Both had thunderbolt amulets, one with an orange end and the other smaller with a black end.
Maya showed them to both girls. “This was something an associate of mine gave me when I first opened shop. She told me when to give it away, and I think that time has come.”
She gave Jas the larger necklace and Mia the smaller one. “Put them together and they become one, and you might even find joy electrifying through it. If you want, it will be just 5 for both.”

5 for two necklaces! That was a bargain! Very happy, Jas handed over their joint pocket money and thanked her profusely. As they both went out wearing their necklaces, the little bell of the door rang over the calm voice of Maya.

“I know it will make your wish come true...”

A little while later, Jas and Mia were sitting in the local park awaiting their parents and the end of life as they knew it. Both girls couldn’t help but fiddle with their necklaces. It wasn’t simply the charm of the jewellery, but also the grief that weighed on both their shoulders. Neither could look the other in the eye. Eventually, Jas spoke.

“They have been gone a long time...” she started, “I can’t believe...this is goodbye...”

Mia nodded sadly, then perked up with an idea. “Hey! Miss Maya said that if we put the lightning together, we get joy. Let’s try it!”

Jas shrugged, secretly happy that Mia was brightening up. “Alright, if it keeps you happy.”

With the necklaces still around them, Jas looked down as Mia strained up. The lightning bolts touched and sparks literally flew. Both girls were blown backwards.

Mia was first up. “WOW!”

Jas wasn’t as amazed. “What sort of practical joke was that?”

Then she pointed. “Mia...your ears...”

Mia grabbed them, feeling them become pointed and furry. Then she cried out, “And your ears too!”

Jas felt her ears grow to the top of her head and longer, keener. Unsure what was happening, but wanting to know, she pointed to the nearby pond.

“Let’s see what’s happening over there!”

They ran over, just in time to see their newly formed ears. Jas’ were long with black tips, while Mia’s were miniature diamonds with a black edge. They were mostly yellow, save that Mia’s were slightly lighter in colour. Both of them watched as their noses shrunk and became a small black dot. The younger sister looked like she didn’t know whether to exclaim in happy surprise or gasp in sheer terror. Jas looked worried, more for her sister than herself, and this terror increased when she saw that their bodies were becoming less visible in the reflection. She looked at her sister briefly then hugged her tight, even when their shorter bodies made their shorts and skirt fall around their ankles.

By this point, both of their cheeks had gained rosy imprints: Mia’s being a soft pink hue of circles that edged close to her chin and Jas’ two orange red ovals further up her face. What they were mostly concentrating on was the sharp pain that emitted from their behinds. The sudden jolt was enough to startle them into shrill voices.

“PIKA!”

“CHU!”

Jas felt a new appendage zigzag out before strengthening and lengthening and becoming as thin as a spade’s edge.  The end curved in a little bit, making Jas feel as if she had a heart shaped tail. She felt it gingerly along her back and noticed that it seemed to be covered in fur, and felt slightly thicker at the bottom. Mia’s new tail was straight until its end pointed down. Her fur was the same thickness, but while Jas’ was yellow, hers was completely black.

The changes seemed to be randomised as the fur began spreading across their chests and tummies. Mia felt that her neck seemed to widen as her body seemed to shorten. It was a weird sensation, given that her innards were adjusting with the changes too. Soon, she was left with an egg shaped body. This was covered in pale yellow fur, as if the sun were shy, with a neckline of jagged black. On the opposite side, Jas too was being painted in a bright yellow with no marks. Her neck slipped into her growing chest and stomach, though only slightly, and she felt her hips widen considerably compared to the rest of her smaller body. It was now impossible to see her sister, so she took of her top, no longer caring what lay underneath. Mia followed her action, curious about the changes. They were soon clutching each other again as both heard their legs snap.

The snapping and popping made the cries of ‘pi’, ‘ka’ and ‘chu’ emit in quick succession. Mia didn’t know how it happened, and Jas wouldn’t want to remember, but the best she could surmise in her head at the time was ‘they’re becoming like broken biscuits, why can’t I feel them!’ Soon, both girls were left with just feet. Mia felt her toes curl together to become more rounded and soon realised that she had paws. Jas’ feet actually grew longer. Both had three indentations.

Jas felt the arms change, and noticed that instead of snapping, the elbows sparked with energy as they were removed. She could feel electricity literally crackling within her and needed to expend this nervous power. The sister found herself producing lots and lots of bolts all around herself and Mia followed fashion. In the meantime, her upper arms thickened with the power to motor her about on four legs and her lower arms more slender. Fingers and thumb were shortened by a great length, but were still there. Unlike Mia’s, whose arms were incredibly short and only had her thumb left. The other fingers merged to make a cusp like paw.

Both girls shrieked as their faces began feeling suddenly podgy and their checks became unbearably hot from all the energy they were making. Their faces grew outwards in different directions, Mia’s sideways and Jas’ lengthways. Mia’s face became quite small compared to her body and her mouth even smaller. Her eyes widened though until her pupils encompassed the whole of her eyes. With a much larger face, Jas’ eyes grew more round, as her pupils also grew in size but the iris remained at the bottom, although it was now a hazelnut brown. Her mouth was longer and she was happy to find it contained all of her teeth, even if they were a little smaller. Fur covered their new heads completely as their hair fell off in one big clump.

Feeling that the changes were complete, the sisters let go of each other and stopped sparking. Jas found herself staring at a Pichu while Mia beheld a Pikachu in front of them. They noticed that they still were their necklaces. Jas slipped hers of gradually, shocked at the changes. Mia took hers off quickly and looked at it.

Recognition dawned on Jas. “Find joy electrifying through it...Maya literally meant that!” she gasped, “We have to go back and get her to change this!”

“What!” Mia said with surprise, “But don’t you see? This is perfect!”

Jas was confused. “Why? We’re Pokémon, little higher than a trash can and...What will our parents say?”

Mia’s face was one of pure mischief. “They don’t need to know. We weren’t happy with them, admit it! This way, we can be together.”

Jas had to admit that was true. She was also happy to see her sister so happy. If she wanted to stay like that, then Jas would have to too. To make sure she was protected. Anyway, being a Pikachu would be fun...

“Alright! Let’s be chus.”

“Hehe. I chus you!”

“Oh really? In that case, I chus you to be IT!”

“Hey, no fair! Get back here!”

“Catch me first!”

They ran around the park and eventually into the forest beyond. They didn’t notice two figures watching them. One, wearing some sort of dark dress and bangle, nodded to them.

“It really did the trick, and soon they will meet up with your friends. I wouldn’t go meeting them again now though, you have a shop to run.”

Maya sighed, with content. “Oh well, I’ll have fun another day. I do so love Pikachus...”
Request for :iconmagicaltf:

After reading and looking at Maya, I decided to make her Dream Emporium part of the story. Hopefully, I got the characterisation right... I really got into writing this story. This is a sort of collab, as :iconmagicaltf: intends to make a picture based on the story.

Pichu is superior. It is not opinion, it is objective fact.
