‘Oh mirror, oh mirror, mirror on the wall,
I'm sick and tired of being the fairest one of all.’

These were the lyrics that Ruby found herself humming to as she listened to the cover of a song called Snow White is…? Weird how certain songs seemed to strike true to the core. This one summing up how she felt.

Ruby was one of the fairest in her community: she wore dazzling neat black rimmed glasses, long flowing straight black hair and pale but not quite snowy white skin. Yet very often her green eyes were sad. She didn’t want to be beautiful. Beautiful came with its own problems. Several guys staring at her figure, or girls muttering jealously to themselves, or the expectancy that Ruby would make it big as a star, or model, or something that made good use of natural beauty. Ruby would rather be ugly! Well, maybe not ugly…just more normal. She wanted to be unique, but not like this. She was really intelligent, it was just either ignored or another mark of envy against her. When she got through university after doing Environmental Sciences, no doubt people would expect her to appear on telly beside Pokémon, talking about pollution or something. Why did people have to judge what she was going to do in life before the future had even struck her?

That’s why she was wandering around this forest, thick with the snow ridden carpet of winter that crunched under each step of her fluffy hiking boots, with furry puffballs bouncing along with each step. Of course Ruby was dressed for the weather: woolly hat, parka and black denim trousers complimenting her look. At least here there wasn’t anyone staring at her. Attention was one thing, and she didn’t mind it and had great ambitions to be a leader in her field one day, but overwhelming staring and focus was another. That’s probably why she liked winter the best, especially here in this forest. It was so isolated, yet magical. The cold didn’t bother her as she watched the snow fall through the thin branches, some of them touching the icicles jutting out of them. The breeze was fresh and inviting. Heck, if she could live in eternal winter she would! Maybe it would be nice to be something that was even more at home here. Instantly Ruby thought of Sawsbuck, in its winter form. Galloping through the trees, bounding through the snow…what a life! Of course, she’d want to be a non-shiny one, that way she wouldn’t be noticed. Yet Sawsbuck were proud looking creatures and what would it be like to be a mighty matriarch of a group of the Pokémon?

Ok, stop thinking stupid thoughts. Like she was suddenly going to become a Sawsbuck! Those things didn’t happen. Now that the thought was in her head though, Ruby couldn’t stop thinking about it. She continued these thoughts, barely listening to the song anymore through her earphones when…

That was seriously the oddest thing she had ever seen. An apple hanging from a branch, pure red…That wasn’t even an apple tree! Tentatively, Ruby pulled the apple off. A flurry of thoughts like a snowstorm whirled around her head. What was it doing here? Since when did oak trees grow apples? Was it enchanted like in that fairy tale? There couldn’t be a logical scientific explanation for this. Ruby considered going home and looking into it but…There wouldn’t be much point. Her fellow flatmates would probably distract her and then the apple would be forgotten and lost. It would be better to experiment here, and there was only one way. Become a test subject. She took a bite.

Well, it certainly tasted like an apple, crisp and juicy. She didn’t feel any different as she swallowed. Then, once it hit the pit of her stomach, Ruby gasped. Something was definitely happening, as the song began nearing the final choruses.

‘Where time is frozen still.’

It started with an overwhelming amount of build up around her chest. Suddenly her clothing began feeling really tense and uncomfortable. What sort of apple was this, and was this where life ended? Then something started poking through her parka.

Fur, white fur. Ruby gingerly touched it, noting how soft it was. It was…really pleasant. Still, this was all really strange. The white fur kept on building up until the parka completely ripped down the middle, dropping to the ground with a muted crunch. The fur continued to expand, covering her shoulders and pointing out to an impossible level. It was really warm though, and Ruby didn’t feel any chill from the woods around her. Her heart was beating fast, and her breathing was getting to the point of hyperventilating. Ruby remained calm though: these were likely down to whatever she was becoming rather than any fear. The softness of the fur kept her comforted.

More fur began spring up around her, starting with her once bare back. Curious, Ruby arched her neck, which began responding to her will growing a little longer and wider, allowing her to properly look down her back. Unlike her front which was a pure white matching the crisp snow, the colour of her back was a dull brown with gold edging where it met the white and had three white dots. It almost looked like…no way! It couldn’t be, surely? Yet her knowledge of the creature told her it was so. It explained the rather unusual sensation in her stomach as she felt it change. Ruby wasn’t sure how, but she guessed that eating meat was going to be hard for her now. Her middle sucked in a little but Ruby found that she was growing quite a strong amount. She kind of looked like a giant fluff ball given the amount of fur covering her too.

A snap in her back made Ruby yelp as she fell to the ground. Ouch! The ground was harder than it looked. She began getting up, elbows bent when suddenly her limbs forced themselves into straight lines. Ruby winced again due to the unexpectedness of it all rather than pain, as both shoulders and pelvis clicked to prevent her usual human movement. As the fur began travelling down both legs and arms, thickening the muscles as they went into strong powerful legs made for running, Ruby kind of felt sad and happy at the same time. Sad that her dissertation was never going to be completed, for how was she supposed to write now? Happy from the dream, the desire within, that she would be happier this way. She wasn’t going to be special now, except perhaps in height. These Pokémon were just under 2 metres right? She had to be a little bigger than that. The new strength in her muscles and the thick fur were so great that her black trousers ripped in a rather spectacular fashion, shreds of it falling gently down.

With the fur having reached elbows and knees, the fur fluffed up once more to white. Slowly getting thicker, they reached the gloves and boots, and became trapped underneath. It was uncomfortable, until fingers and toes began curling in on themselves and hardening. Growing around her feet and hands, the new hoofs eventually pointed out, splitting the gloves and boots down their middles, causing the pom-poms from her boots to bounce away a little. The fur that had once been trapped made a splayed effect, creating a new kind of snow boot on each limb. Yeah, she definitely wasn’t going to finish the project now.

Ruby fully expected her head to be next, but it was the twitching in her rear end that began instead. It started with a new sensation, as something grew, then firmness from bone and tone from muscle, before being encased in the same fur. It split at the end into two, the larger point being on top, both dropping downwards. There was a little restriction in movement, but Ruby was too overjoyed with the feeling of having a tail.

Now it was the time for the head, starting with her nose and mouth pointing outwards. Her glasses fell to the ground, the lenses amazingly not shattering, but Ruby had closed her eyes due to the unbearable feeling of her skull reshaping. Her canines fell out to make her a complete herbivore as the nose became small and black. Her senses were tingling a lot, the grass hidden beneath her calling out to her stomach. The fur then began spreading, beige around her chin and lips, the dull brown on top. The eyes were forced to the sides as the fur reached them, and were smaller than before. It would provide greater views of her surroundings, just not as clear as normal human sight. A golden yellow mark split down from each eye, as her hair promptly reformed into fur. The ears moved upwards, arching outwards into diamond shapes with browner middles, the earphones unable to stand it and dropping with the music player to the ground. So sharp was this hearing that Ruby could hear the echoes of snow falling to the ground further away. Her hat had remained firmly on her head, only to suddenly be raised up as Ruby gave a yelp as a new structure began forming. The hat stayed on the two branches, until the gap between them increased and the clothing could bear it no longer, so shreds of it fell on her face, causing Ruby to shake her head. The white stick like growths continued their way upwards, some points branching off, until it ended in two blunt points. Towering above her was a set of antlers, making Ruby’s transformation into a slightly bigger and furrier winter form Sawsbuck complete.

Instincts began making their way through Ruby’s mind, and she had the intelligence to let some of them in. She didn’t want to lose sight of herself, but she did want to survive. She would change with the seasons, but winter would remain her favourite. Her grass typing was in hibernation really, everything else felt normal, as if her dormant self had been set free. She wanted to be in a herd: although she was bigger, it shouldn’t be unusual enough to scare them; maybe she could protect herself and them. Plus, she really wanted to be away from humanity, no one was going to go crazy over her anymore. She was special, but she wasn’t totally unique. Thank goodness she wasn’t shiny.

Paths she hadn’t seen in the woods before opened before Ruby as she opened her eyes. Oh this would be fun! She began galloping through the snow, bounding with glee. This was going to be exciting.

A little while later someone came to the scene, noticing the fallen clothes and hoof marks. This woman began picking up the items, and scrapping the snow to covered up the previous hiking boot marks, before noticing the music player. It was running out of power, but a new song was playing. She checked the track and found herself smiling. It was very fitting for what had just happened.
Request for :iconartooinst:.

There's so many things that the requester me wanted to include that I can't put it all here, it would be too long. I will say though that the end result was for a bigger, fluffier Sawsbuck than average, hence all the mentions of height and fur. I ask that if anything is missing, for the requester to let me know. I'll add it!

With the mention of a magic apple, I instantly went into Snow White territory and a song popped into my head. You don't need to know it to enjoy the story, but if you are interested in what it is, here's a link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgkZck…. In terms of character, Snow White is described as being the fairest one of all, but what if someone didn't want that. Hence the character. Plus, I cannot help but pun apparently in the title. XD

I have no idea what song would have played on the music player at the end, so if you have any suggestions, why not comment with them?

Very nice tf story! Intelligently written.

I love the ending you created. It combined with your description makes me want to find a song that would actually fit into the scene!
